Sing O ye Heavens

GENERAL INFORMATION

Music forms an integral part of the cathedral tradition and many musicians associated with Christ Church cathedral from the late Renaissance to the 20th century composed anthems and services, which survive both in the cathedral archives and in other sources. This compact disc of anthems in performance presents a cross section of the anthem repertoire by composers including Thomas Bateson, Benjamin Rogers, Richard Hosier, Ralph Roseingrave, Richard Woodward and Robert Stewart. Much of this music, which ranges from full anthems for unaccompanied choir to solo and verse anthems with organ accompaniment, is recorded for the first time.

Barra Boydell lectures in Musicology at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, and is the author of The Cramhorne and other Renaissance Windcaps (Netherlands, 1982) and Music & Paintings in the National Gallery of Ireland (Dublin, 1985).
