RE-FURBISHING THE STAINED GLASS

The cathedral possesses one of the finest collections of stained glass in the country, dating back to the 1871-8 restoration, but many of these windows are simply 'caving in' due to a lack of sufficient 'anchors' and vibration caused by passing heavy traffic. Also the external iron grids are rusting and are damaging the stonework. It is only a matter of time before these windows collapse and are beyond repair.

An extract from 'A Report of a Survey of Stained Glass in the Church of Ireland Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough' by David Lawrence (1996) points out that:

"the ferramenta are now all rusty ... some have started to cause damage to the stonework ... this situation can only get worse with time and one can expect a lot more damage ... within the next twenty years"

In all, about 75 windows will need to be treated but, of these, four windows have been identified as in dire need of immediate rescue before collapse. These windows are to be treated as a matter of urgency and, with the continuing help of our supporters, we hope to be in a position to undertake this project as soon as possible.
