DEVELOPMENT OF THE CRYPT The crypt at Christ Church Cathedral, which dates to 1172, is one of the largest medieval crypts in either Britain or Ireland. It is one of the chief tourist attractions in Dublin and houses many of the cathedral's treasures. The site has never been fully explored, but only a professional archaeological dig would unearth any treasures buried underneath. |
| The crypt is a labyrinth of treasures which cannot be appropriately displayed or guarded. The lighting is poor and many of the various tombs and artefacts are in need of renovation or repair. A full restoration of the crypt and a proper display of the cathedral's treasury would be an enormous tourist attraction and a major source of income for the future, enabling the cathedral to be more self-sufficient and to better support the local community. |

Much of this work has already been completed, due to the success that the Cathedral Board has had in securing a banking loan of approximately £1 million for this project. The new crypt has been re-opened to the public but in order for the cathedral to develop the attraction as planned, while honouring these considerable loan repayments, we need the financial support of both the public and private sectors. |
