CHRIST CHURCH 2000
|
AN INTRODUCTION
Christ Church Cathedral has an urgent need - its fabric requires major renovations and renewal. The Cathedral was extensively restored in the nineteenth century restoration and, more recently, the Safeguard Christ Church campaign in 1980 saw the interior stonework cleaned and the building re-roofed. For a Cathedral which has existed for almost 1000 years, however, more comprehensive work needs to be undertaken today if it is to continue to thrive into the 21st Century. In 1997, the Cathedral Board identified key projects which needed to be undertaken if the cathedral were to survive for the benefit of this and future generations. The total budget for these works was set at nearly £4 million, to be collected over the next 5-10 years. |
| Christ Church Cathedral is the
oldest building standing in Dublin, having been founded just after the
turn of the last millennium. The present cathedral was built to reconcile
the Celtic and Anglo-Norman traditions and this purpose of reconciliation
for today's society is still as important as ever. The cathedral is a
landmark in the heart of Dublin and is the home of one of the finest
choirs in the country. It is also a focus for the various communities that
make up our city, and is the diocesan cathedral for Dublin and Glendalough.
It is, however, at a cross-roads. Through the cathedral appeal, Christ Church 2000, we have the opportunity to develop the cathedral as a major focal point for Dublin in the 21st century. We have already raised £1.2 million towards our long-term goal but still very much remains to be done and we need call upon all those interested in the cultural and spiritual life of Dublin for support. |
